There are many
hats that I wear…
Wife. Mom. Daughter.
Sister. Friend. Student.
But there s one
hat that really speaks to me, and it
is that of a teacher. Although I cannot imagine myself doing anything else now,
I never planned to become a teacher.
In 2006, I went
to Washburn University as a Mass Media major and wanted to become a sports
broadcaster. Sophomore year, one of my friends from the Education Department
invited me on a study abroad trip to Jamaica. A group of students would be
traveling to two areas of Jamaica to teach in underprivileged schools. They
needed one more student to go and it was a cheap way for me to travel, so I
went. The experience in Jamaica was life-changing. The moment I saw those
students’ eyes light up during a lesson, I knew what I had to do.
When we
returned to campus, I changed my major to Education and have never looked back.
